GAMES OF THE WEEK Week 6: Pre-Game Analysis Region 1: Euless Trinity vs. Colleyville Heritage Region one is usually a region that’s displays some of the best football our state has to offer, from greats such as Southlake to Euless. This week will be no different as Euless trinity looks to continue its steam roll right over Heritage this weekend at Colleyville. Both Trinity and Heritage are ranked in our Top 25, Euless boasting the number one ranking for 6 straight weeks while Heritage gleamed in last weekend at #23. Both have drastically different methods of winning games. One is a pretty well balanced machine, while the other is a brut offensive juggernaut this season. This should be an exciting night, as it always is when talking about Metroplex football. The Breakdown: Offense: Heritage has one of the states most exciting offensive units this season, averaging close to 50 pts a game. The critics would say however that most of that scoring has gone up against pretty weak opponents, but we will stick with the numbers and let the chips fall where they may. Trinity has also done very well this season despite having a different offensive philosophy, running a power game. Trinity is averaging 31 points per game, and doing it with one of the toughest schedules in the region. The upper hand offensively obviously goes to Heritages ability to put points up quickly, but the Trojans have nothing to fear they are more then capable of powering their way through this one. Defense: The Trojans have one of the states best defenses, and have been matched up with some of the states best offensive units. This week is no different against Heritage, The Trojans have a huge Defensive front seven that quickly runs down and wears down opposing offensive lines. Not only does their shear size wear down opponents, they also have defensive speed. They may not be the fastest team in the state, but they are capable of causing a high powered offensive unit like Heritage to slow down the tempo. Heritage has a good defense, but nothing really jaw dropping. They have been consistent and efficient averaging 16.4 PPGA. Heritage will need to be well conditioned to deal with the power attack that the Trojans will through at an inferior defensive unit. Who Win’s: We predict that the Trojans will carry on for a seventh straight week in both our Top 12 and the number one spot. The Trojans are far to much to handle for such Heritage team that hasn’t seen anything remotely similar to what the Trojans will field this weekend. We think heritage will put a fight up early, but in the end lose due to being overmatched all over the field.
Region 2: Cy-Creek Vs Cy-Woods This is a fascinating match up involving two young programs who have has solid starts of the seasons. Cy-creek upset the sitting district champion Cy-Ridge 31-21 in a dramatic fashion. Not only did Creek offensively beat an aggressive Ridge defense their defense held the number four recruit in the nation to a staggering 50 yards on 18 attempts. Cy-woods on the other hand has been steam-rolling through just about everyone to a 2-1 record in their first varsity football season. Their only lose coming by Cy-Ridge, in a dramatic 43-41 loss. Woods despite having less big named players was able to hang with Cy-Ridge for 4 quarters, even though they lost the game they still impressed with keeping up with a offense that is used to out doing the opposing offense. If the last two weeks have been any indication for these two programs, this should be an exciting game. The Breakdown: Defense: Cy-woods and Cy-creek both belong to districts that play spectacular offense, and absent defense. We expect much of the same during this game, however we do expect Cy-creek to field the better defensive unit in this match up which may bring this game more then just who could do more with the time they had to score. Cy-Creek halted an almost invincible rushing machine of Shepard-Limpscomb to a stop. Cy-creek made Russell Shepard look very Human last week, and could do much of the same to the Cy-Woods offense. With Falls and Woods playing such good football right now, the focus is on them. And the Cy-creek defense is hungry. Cy-woods has played good defense up until they played Cy-Ridge, which ordinarly wouldn’t of been a huge problem. However, cy-creek has shown just a little more. Woods will have to play disciplined football against Creek who has shown a rare balance in offensive scheme that can be very difficult to spot if mistakes are allowed. Prediction: Cy-Creek pulls of a wild upset in a close one.
Region 3: Humble vs. Eisenhower A battle of old foes, it wasn’t too long ago when these two shared a district in the 90’s. The story then was always Big Ike, or The wildcats. These two have been playing each other since Eisenhower first opened its doors in the 70’s, and every time has been a battle. Ike in the 90’s was known for its option offense, and Humble its defense. Rarely enough, Both teams this year have defined themselves offensively. Ike has a tremendous amount of senior talent, and Humble a young stable of future stars. Who will win this one? How will it play out? Really, every game against these two rivals is a different story. One thing is for certain, it will be close. The Breakdown: Offense: Both teams bring in offenses that have been solid. Ike has played a tougher schedule facing off with the like of North Shore and Hightower that amounted to losses. However, they did show their might against to very convincing wins over Kingwood (39-13) and MacArthur(56-0). Ike has a variety of weapon of offense, and among them is University of Texas commit Greg Timmons. While Timmons isn’t exactly getting the number for grabs he would like, he is still averaging close to 28 yards a catch. RB Curtis McGregor has also shown an ability to be a threat from the backfield or through the air. There is no argument here, Ike is stacked. Humble Fields a pretty balanced offense with QB Keith Baker leading the way with an incredibly diverse way of scoring. Baker has stacked on a total of 9 all purpose touchdowns. Humble although started out rather slow offensively against Spring (35-7 loss) they have since rebounded scoring more then 30pts in the first 2 quarters of the last two games played. Humble spreads the ball around to various receivers, and runs the ball just enough to throw off defenses. Defense: Humble has the better defense here after showing they can contain high octane offenses such as the Cy-Ridge offense. Humble held Russell Shepard to a measly 18 yards rushing in their season opener, and have since shut down opponents. They struggled against Spring during Week 1, but are 100% healthy again. This should be a battle of the trenches. Both Humble and Ike feature a big Defensive line, both averaging about 260lbs. Ike also features one of the state’s best defensive prospects in Craig Loston, he is currently a Clemson commit. Verlis Martin is also a senior who is having a excellent season with a team high 3 interceptions. This will be a battle, on both sides of the ball. |
